The Random Thoughts of Triwi

Anime Overload (As if that’s possible)

So for some reason I got into an even deeper Anime watching mood this past week.  I’ve been watching Anime for a good portion of my life off and on, it’s only been about two years that it became almost an obsession to the point I’m watching full series weekly.  Since Kannagi has ended (well at least until I hope for a second season), and a second season of Haruhi Suzumiya has not blessed us anime fans yet, obviously I go and search a new series.  I can’t recall what lead me to it, but Love Hina was the first on my list.  I remember seeing bits and pieces of the manga and anime when I was younger, I never really did watch it.

After I finished Love Hina, I saw Please Teacher in the “similar videos” on the side.  I remember hearing about that from a commercial way back when it was new, so seeing it was also a romantic comedy I checked that out too.  From there, a small amount of research showed me the sequel, Please Twins which, was another romantic comedy.  It’s not so much the romance part, as it is the comedy part that made me want to watch them.  So I figure I might as well do a paragraph or two about each series.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Love Hina
The wings have nothing to do with the story, but I think wings are sexy.
The wings have nothing to do with the story, but I think wings are sexy.
Starting up in this past week of my Anime lineup was Love Hina.  I’d like to start this section by giving my quick thoughts on the ever famous war of: Sub vs dubs.  Love Hina dubs for the most part I could tolerate, I’m not much of a critic when it comes to voice acting.  Kaolla Su at first was annoying, it grew on me eventually however.  Something about her yelling “Mecha-toma Three! Go!” made me laugh.  Here’s where I go into my rare dub critic mode.  Of all the voices, it was the main character Keitaro, that got on my nerves.  Perhaps it was the fact that I didn’t feel like reading much, cause I was having a caffeine hangover from new years, but I stuck it with the dubs the whole way through.  Keitaro’s nerdy voice as the series went on, annoyed me more and more.  The rest of the cast didn’t really get to me, but the fact Keitaro is the main character, I would suggest going subs, that is if your not having a caffeine overdose at the time.
Other then the voice acting, I thought it was an enjoyable series.  I felt it had a very good balance of drama and comedy.  Lets not forget plenty of fan service!  The various scenes of Naru, or most of the other girls screaming out “YOU PERVERT” and launching Keitaro into the atmosphere never got old.  I could tell almost right away Naru would have been the girl from when he was a kid, that he made the promise to, I think that’s pretty obvious.
Overall, I would highly suggest this series, both for the drama and the comedy.  I think the story telling was pretty well done.  The OVA’s however seem to be a little under the standards as the rest of the series.  Kanako right away becomes a very annoying character, and even though she and Keitaro are not related by blood, she is still psychotic.
Please Teacher
Main cast of Onegai Teacher.
The main cast of Onegai Teacher.
Please Teacher was next on my list.  We’ve all heard stories about a student having some kind of a relationship with a teacher.  Please Teacher is the same basic idea, except the teacher is a half alien and the main character is actually 18 in a 15 year old body.  The series I found to be pretty funny.  The storyline I found to be pretty bizarre.  Anything from having to marry your teacher to cover up the fact she is an alien, to Ichigo actually being 21, there are plenty of moments that will give you a double take effect.
I again watched the series in dubs, for some reason they were easier to find and better video quality at the time.  I did not find any real serious problems with the English voice acting.  Please Teacher however, does have its faults.  The story line itself, while it is decent, I couldn’t help but feel it was lacking in some way.  I can not exactly say what, but in the end the story felt a little underwhelming.
In the end, Please Teacher was an interesting series, complete with a LOT of fan service.  Considering it is a short series, if you have not already seen it, might be worth while if your interested in something short.
Please Twins
The three main characters of Onegai Twins.
The three main characters of Onegai Twins.
Please Twins is the sequal to Please Teacher, set in the same town yet two years later.  I thought it was pretty neat that they used most of the characters from the first series.  Please Twins was not as much of a bizarre story in my opinion, compared to its prequel. The fact however both Miina and Karen were falling in love with Maiku, and one of them was a relative, could be rated as bizarre however.  It’s the fact that one of them was not related that was a catalyst for these feelings.
I think you can guess that I watched this in dubs as well.  Considering I did not have a problem with Please Teacher’s dubs, I figured these would not be a problem as well.  They were not a problem like I thought, but right away I could recognize the voice actor that played Maiku.  Johnny Yong Bosch, who was also the voice of Ichigo from Bleach,  Lelouch from Code Geass, and Itsuki Koizumi from Haruhi Suzumiya, seems to be in a lot of major parts.   It’s only a matter of time before I hear his unique voice as another main character.
Please Twins story line, just like Please Teacher, felt a little underwhelming.  Perhaps it’s because i’m just coming down from watching Haruhi Suzumiya and Code Geass, that I feel a little more picky on story lines.  Yet again like Please Teacher, I would suggest giving this anime a shot if your searching for a short series again.  Of course watch Please Teacher first, this is the sequel!  While not necessarily important, it adds a lot to the story.  This sequel too, gives you a lot of fan service, so that is a plus.  Who doesn’t like a lot of fan service?  It can be over used yes, but I doubt for my tastes it will get that far.
Well thats about it, I got three more lined up to watch.  Those three would be Crest of the Stars, Chrono Crusade, and Negima.  The first two were recommended by some people I know, Negima I found by chance while surfing Anime News Network.  I took a peak at all three to see if I should go sub or dub.  I can tell both Crest and Negima’s dubs are very poorly done, so I will be going the sub route.  Chrono Crusade however, have not compared those yet.  Might as well go subs while I’m at it though.  Which one will I watch first? I guess I will flip a coin, and by coin I mean, some freaky three sided coin I just made up.
Kannagi Episode 13 – Jin goes “dere”
Seems like only yesterday I was asking if I should even consider watching Kannagi. It’s a shame we find ourselves at the finale so soon.  At least Code Geass kept me wanting more for a few months.  The last three episodes in my opinion were lacking the charm like the first ten had.  Never the less here’s my “review.”
Nagiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!! =(  *sad panda*
Nagiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!! =( *sad panda*
Finally Nagi has some more air time on her own show.  Not much to say about this scene though, Nagi was sad, it was raining, etc.  Quite sad she was feeling this way however.
Yeah Tsugumi! Preach it!
Yeah Tsugumi! Preach it!
Tsugumi is always the voice of reason.  It’s unfortunate that Jin is too blind to see how she really feels, so she’s often getting her hopes up for nothing.  However if it wasn’t for her, you can bet Jin would have gotten no where near where he is now.  In my opinion, she is the unsung heroine of the story.  Gif Mo’ Tsugumi!  I’m a sucker for red haired girls too. =O
o.o
I coulden't help but think, what with the music and the mood, the words "Drama Category Nominee" to pop up.
Yeah I’m a bit heartless, just didn’t wanna see her crying and stuff.  Overall a very emotional scene.  I want my comedy back.
She said that a little too easily..
It's cute I guess, I just don't like Jin..
Once a Perv, always a Perv!
Once a Perv, always a Perv!
At least the whole sad/emo/just plain drama seems to be somewhat over.  I still want my comedy back like the first ten episodes. -_-  Meh I’m bitter I guess.
Jin is not gonna have an excuse for this one.
Ahh there the comedy I’ve been waiting for, well ten seconds or so of it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I didn’t really have much to say about the episode itself, what I do want to rant about is if there will be a second season or not.  I have very little doubt in my mind there will be a second season.  Lets start it from a business point of view.  The DVD sales seem to be doing well, they are usually high up in DVD rankings, according to Anime News Network any way.  If your gonna look at it from a business point of view, I would really think pursuing a second season would be a wise decision.  It’s a popular series, a lot of people want a second season, including myself.  The Kannagi Mangaka is getting back to writing very soon (if she has not already) any how, there is more to this story left.

I reference it a lot but Azumanga Daioh and Lucky star basically “had” to end because the story was at the end of their time in school for the main characters, which basically was the story.  Kannagi on the other hand, has plenty of a time line left that can continue a story.  Lets not forget their are plenty of things left unanswered.  I’m aware of course it can just continue as a manga, and not do an anime.  That would be very disappointing though, and I see no reason in discontinuing the anime series.

Of course, this could all just me rationalizing, well whatever it is I still want a second season.  Again, using that saying I despise, yet remains true: Only time will tell.  I hate waiting though. =\

Kannagi Episode 12 – Truly Ephemeral

Not much to say about this episode really.  To me it felt like a filler, and of course to set it up for the final episode.  Usually I take a handful of pictures and post silly commnets under and give my thoughts on a few things.  However this episode, it doesn’t seem worth the effort.  Kannagi which is a drama and a romantic comedy, two episodes in a row really hit on that drama genre.  Emo levels seem to spike at an all time high, very few funny things occur.  Personally I wish it would have just stayed a comedy genre, I like the laughs! Ah but this isent a slice of life genre like Lucky Star or Azumanga Daioh.  This actually has a story, so of course there is bound to be drama.

Little disappointed in this episode, I waited a week to see what would become of Nagi, or at least get a hint. I am no closer then where I was a week ago.  The fight scene with Zange-chan however, VERY satisfying to watch.  I will admit I replayed that a few times, if only someone would make a gif of that, maybe I will!

One episode to go, what will happen with the story?  We will find out in about a week, and I truly hope some odd ends get solved, but at the same time confirm or at least hint at a season two.  Thirteen episodes is way too short for this series!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well there’s my short little rant on the episode.  Guess I’ll change the banner from Code Geass to Dizzy.  I’m still a massive Guilty Gear fanatic.
I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays!  Since I mostly talk about Anime, let us hope for a new year of great Anime series to bless our computer and TV screens!
Me however? I think I’ll spend the rest of the night dodging the company thats invaded my house, then play WoW until the sun rises, damn you WoW addiction!
Kannagi Episode 11 – Yet, Uncertain
I suppose the last few episodes being full of some pretty funny scenes, was bound to come to an end.  This episode brings with it a large share of emo seriousness.
An evil pumpkin of doom, duh.
An evil pumpkin of doom, duh.
Jin starts the episode with a round of 20 questions apparently.  Why why why!  You know how we were kids, and we wanted to annoy the hell out of someone, we would ask why a million times?  I’m getting that annoyance right now.
Going to need a lot of editting, after what we found out last episode.
It’s okay Zange-chan, you’re cute you don’t have to be a good singer.  I wouldn’t buy it though.
Replace Zange with Nagi and you got the otaku rage all over again!
Replace Zange with Nagi and you got the otaku rage all over again!
It’s most likely unintentional but this short little scene reminds me of the otaku outrage.  I feel that whole story gave this little scene a little extra lulz.
Karma is kicking your ass little man.
Give it a few months, a game like this is bound to show up.
I can understand Jin’s frustration, but he’s still kind of a jerk for saying all that he did.
It's unfortunate, but it makes sense.
Emo level has reached critical mass.
Emo level has reached critical mass.
Nagi as you can tell is very frustrated and upset, not knowing who she truly is.  Next episodes title, to me any way, sounds like it holds the answer.
This easily could mean a few things.
This easily could mean a few things.
To give two examples going through my mind right now.  The first and most likely is that, Nagi is not a god, she is something else.  Most likely a spirit believing she was a god as it was stated.  The second, yet less likely, is that Nagi is in fact the actual god.  However for some reason people never knew she actually existed. Yes I know her shrine was there, but if people knew she existed, I doubt the tree would have been cut down.  It’s a stretch, which is why I said it’s less likely.  I just wouldn’t go right out and say it’s false just yet.
kannagi11-11
Let's end this episode with some additional touches of emo.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Overall not a very fun episode to view.  The various jokes and funny scenes we fans have grown to love, none made an appearance really this episode.  I did get a chuckle out of that anime show at the start, but that’s about it.  I do hope the comedy part comes back in episode twelve.

Episode 13 is said to be the final episode.  I can not argue with that.  I will however argue that it is the final episode of the season, not of the series.  While I may not have any good proof, I do however, hope there will be a second season.  Thirteen episodes feels way too short for this story.  The author herself wants to get back to writing, and as news would have it, there are a number of unaired episodes.  I would be very surprised if a second season did not come around.  Publicity for this anime is just insane right now, it would be unwise not to continue into more seasons.  Although I hate this saying, it’s never more true to say, only time will tell.

Update on Kannagi Mangaka’s Health
December 14, 2008, 4:39 AM
Filed under: Anime | Tags:

If you have not already heard the news, over at Anime News Network they gave us an update on the author of Kannagi’s health.  Takenashi still denies that the hiatus on the manga was not because of the recent “Nagi Virginity Outrage.”  About that, I want to stress the fact that I still find that whole.. thing.. insane.   I’m glad to see that the author despite this, is eager to get back to writing.  Besides, from what I’ve been hearing the latest manga never actually stated nagi had a boyfriend in the past for sure, just hinted.  I also think it’s insane I’m reading things that the series is coming to a close for sure.  Seems people want to settle on a decision instead of letting things play out.   The series I feel any how, still has a lot of life in it, otaku outrage or not.  What I find amazing it how quickly something so tiny, can escalate into something unbelievable.  Truth be told, I never once thought the series was gonna be on a indefinite hiatus for long.  Guess I’m one of the few that was staying optimistic from the start.

Personally I found the series (as you can see in earlier blog posts) from the whole controversy.  I’m sure there are a lot more who found it this way as well.  Even if the series because of this ridiculous (yet somewhat hysterical) chain of events loses fans, there’s plenty to fill their spots.  I’m patiently (outright lie actually) waiting for sub versions of Kannagi episode 11 of the Anime.  I took at peak at the raw version and skipped through it out of curiosity.  Doesn’t look like a totally happy episode, never the less I can’t wait!

Guess I’ll go do my homework for Monday nights class.  Least it’s not high school any more!

Finally got around to it..

If it’s one thing I highly dislike, is finishing an anime series to know there are no more episodes.  I for months have put off watching the last 4 episodes of Lucky Star as I knew it was coming to an end.  The series was pretty funny, and I enjoyed the many references to other series throughout the episodes.  If I had to pick my favorite character (I enjoyed them all though), I would have to pick Kagami.  I find it funny that she tried to act serious a lot but it doesn’t always work that way.  Her also being an anime/video game fan was pretty neat too, despite her sometimes serious mood.  I had watched the OVA part where they are all in the MMORPG world, the whole way through I was laughing while watching it.

I decided I should finally finish the series because, I am the kind of person who prefers to watch one series at a time.  In my mind I usually stack up series I want to watch, and my list was starting to get a little longer.  Despite being an anime fan, I have never seen The Melencholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.  Oh noes!  Well so I finished the last 4 episodes of Lucky Star, sad to see it go.  I started Haruhi Suzumiya right away, and I found some pretty high quality episodes to watch too, good for youtube any way as most of the time the quality there makes me cringe.  I could tell right away why Haruhi is such a cult icon in the anime world.  The series was pretty funny, yet at the same time awesome.  I watched all the episodes in one night, and I can’t wait for the next season.  I hear 2009 is the next season, not sure when exactly in the next year though.

Well I finished Haruhi (for now), so I moved on to Kannagi.  It’s pretty interesting, very funny (I like comedy animes as you can see).  I only have watched up to episode three.  Perhaps when I catch up to the current episodes I’ll start doing episode reviews like I did for Code Geass.

There’s this website I used to go to for when I was big into Bleach (I haven’t watched that series in ages though), and they have a lot of other anime series to download for free.  The website is Bleach Exile if you want to check it out.   There they have updated lists of Kanngi episodes to download.  Thats great and all but here’s the problem.  Instead of being in a simple format, the sub group used an MKV video format, which windows media player doe sent support out of the box, not surprised.  I could have taken the easy road and just used Media Player Classic to watch it, works just as well.

I however, am very stubborn and wanted the codec to view it in windows media player.  After hours of downloading different codecs and splitters and blah blah blah, I finally found a codec pack that worked.  It’s called CCCP, apparently the whole soviet theme is a pun on the USSR in the Cryllic alphabet or something, didn’t really read into it.  Apperently this group originally was for playback of various anime fansubs.  So I downloaded and installed it, it worked but no subtitles.  After a little more research I had to enable in the settings Autoload VSFilter.  Finally after hours I could finally watch Kanngi episodes in WMP (again I’m stubborn).  Word of warning though, if you the reader, decide to visit these sites and download things I’m not responsible for what happens to your computer.  I have had no problems, but that doesen’t mean something could happen.  So yeah it should be self explanatory but, use at your own risk.  Worked for me though.

Kannagi, any good?

Just a quick post in hopes to get some replies about the series Kannagi.  This series was recently brought to my attention after reading DarkMirage’s Blog Entry about the extreme otaku rage over the whole “Is Nagi a Virgin” or not.  While I found this hysterical, got me thinking if I should attempt to hunt down some episodes, or just save my time.  It looked interesting enough however.

In unrelated news, I’ve been playing possibly too much Wrath of the Lich King, which if you don’t know (dunno how you would not) is the World of Warcraft expansion. Oh noes secrets out I play WoW. Ha ha, Triwi is my characters name and I’m the only one on the US armory with the name.  Go me?  I say too much but I’m only level 73.. my up and coming priest however went from 32 to 44 in 3 days using the Recruit a Friend triple experience.  I imagine i’ll be 70 by sunday, same with my friend ha ha.
